The 2026 regulation reset is the biggest in F1 since 2014. Here's how it changes our predictions.
2026 power units must deploy 50% of total power electrically. Teams that master electrical deployment timing win races โ new expertise required.
Moveable front and rear wing sections for DRS-like drag reduction. Car balance shifts dramatically from qualifying trim to race trim โ team strategy changes.
New regs always compress the field. The midfield teams McLaren, Mercedes and Alpine are expected to close the gap significantly compared to 2025.
Max Verstappen is predicted to win the 2026 Drivers' Championship despite new regulations that have tightened the field. Red Bull's engineering depth, Verstappen's raw pace advantage, and his track record of adapting to new machinery quickly all point to a fourth title. The closest challenger is expected to be Mercedes' George Russell, with Ferrari's Leclerc as a wildcard.
Red Bull's 2026 car has excellent mechanical grip and Verstappen's relationship with the team is unparalleled. The new PU rules compressed their engine advantage, but their chassis development programme is the benchmark.
Mercedes dominated the last regulation reset in 2014. Their electrical engineering expertise directly suits the 50% hybrid power requirement. Russell is an elite driver; Hamilton's departure to Ferrari adds pressure. Mercedes are the most likely team to overthrow Red Bull.
Leclerc is arguably the second-fastest driver on the grid. Ferrari's 2026 PU development has produced a powerful unit, but their electrical deployment timing in race conditions remains a concern. Strategy errors under pressure continue to cost Ferrari championships.
McLaren's 2025 momentum was significant. Their 2026 chassis is competitive and Norris has the raw pace. If their PU is within half a second of Red Bull's, Norris is a championship wildcard.
